Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

Population: 1,612,000

Together with Bavaria, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (McPom) is one of the most popular travel destinations for Germans. The region impresses with its location on the Baltic Sea: instead of the Wadden Sea, there are impressive chalk cliffs, steep coasts and long, fine sandy beaches

Wellness hotels and the fresh, salty sea air offer ideal conditions for relaxation and good health. In addition to the coast, McPom boasts numerous picturesque lake regions, including the Mecklenburg Lake District, known as the “Land of 1,000 Lakes.” Historic old towns such as Stralsund, Wismar, and Schwerin also attract culture enthusiasts.

Schwerin, the state capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, delights visitors with its unique blend of historical elegance and natural surroundings

The city is surrounded by numerous lakes and has a peaceful, almost fairy-tale-like atmosphere.

In the lovingly restored Old Town, winding alleys, cafés, and the imposing Schwerin Cathedral invite you to stroll and linger.

The Franzosenweg, a street with enchanting villas by the water, begins right next to the castle park. The grinding mill is also just a stone's throw away.

Traditional seaside resorts, idyllic fishing villages, and diverse natural landscapes line the coast—ideal for those seeking relaxation as well as active vacationers. Compared to the North Sea, the Baltic Sea is significantly calmer and gentler. Since there is hardly any tidal range, the water level remains nearly constant, making swimming, beach walks, and water sports particularly enjoyable. Instead of vast mudflats, the landscape here is characterized by gently sloping shores, cliffs, and striking natural landmarks such as the chalk cliffs on Rügen. Another characteristic feature is the many piers that extend far out into the sea and invite visitors to take a stroll. The seawater is relatively low in salt.

In the summer, however, it can get very crowded here.

Large parts of the peninsula are part of the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park and feature pristine dunes, expansive beaches, tranquil Bodden shores, and dense coastal forests. The region reveals its unspoiled side especially during the quieter seasons: in the fall for crane migration, and in the spring and winter for long hikes, bike rides, and nature observation. Characteristic towns such as Ahrenshoop, Prerow, and Zingst combine maritime charm, artistic tradition, and sustainable tourism.

Also worth seeing: the Luisentempel - an elegant circular building on a hill, erected in honor of the popular Prussian Queen Luise. If you stroll along the so-called Götterallee, you will come across ancient sculptures that tell of wisdom, strength and beauty.

A visit to the Ozeaneum offers fascinating insights into the underwater world of the Baltic Sea and the world’s oceans. From Stralsund, you can take day trips to the island of Rügen, home to the famous chalk cliffs in Jasmund National Park, or to the car-free island of Hiddensee. The pieces are mostly handmade and reflect local traditions.

These handmade pieces are both decorative and practical for everyday use.

In Schwerin, the bar Zum Freischütz is considered a well-known hangout, complemented by smaller bars and occasional club nights. In addition, there are occasional privately organized parties and raves, which are usually advertised locally.

Open-air and festival events play a special role; they often take place for just a few days a year and attract visitors from all over Germany. Techno and psytrance are particularly popular at these events.

The mostly flat landscape is ideal for leisurely day trips or longer cycling tours, though there are also hilly areas and strong winds near the Baltic Sea.

Wildlife: On rural roads through forests and nature reserves, encounters with wild boars or deer can cause fatal car accidents. Drive with caution, especially on tree-lined roads.

Insects: Mosquitoes and ticks can spread diseases in the summer. Protective measures such as insect repellent and long clothing are recommended.

Traffic jams during peak season: Traffic jams can occur on roads and highways around the Baltic Sea, especially during summer vacation and on weekends. Prehistory and the Middle Ages

The history of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania dates back to prehistoric times. Archaeological findings show that the region was already inhabited by various peoples during the Bronze Age. In the Middle Ages, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was part of the Holy Roman Empire and was shaped by various Slavic and German rulers. The Slavic Wends, in particular, settled in the region, and in the 12th century, German missionaries and knights began the Christianization of the area. The Duchy of Mecklenburg emerged in the 13th century and played a significant role in the region’s political and cultural development until the 19th century.

In the 16th century, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania underwent a period of upheaval due to the Reformation and the religious tensions that accompanied it. The Thirty Years' War (1618–1648) had a severe impact on the region, which was partially destroyed and suffered from looting and political upheaval.

During the Weimar Republic (1919–1933), Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was affected by political instability and the rise to power of the National Socialists. Rügen, particularly Peenemünde, was the center of German rocket research. World War II had a severe impact on the region, and many cities (particularly Rostock, Stralsund, and Wismar) were destroyed by air raids and ground combat.

After World War II and the GDR

After the end of World War II, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania became part of the Soviet Occupation Zone and later the German Democratic Republic (GDR). During this period, the region was strongly shaped by the socialist planned economy and the political and geographical division of Germany. Many of the more rural areas were collectivized, and the population experienced a shift from traditional farming methods to industrial and state-controlled systems. The Baltic Sea coast played an important role as both a tourist destination and a military zone.

The Fall of the Berlin Wall and German Reunification

With the peaceful revolution of 1989 and the reunification of Germany in 1990, the political system of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania underwent a transformation. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, many former East German citizens moved to western German states in search of (better) job opportunities (particularly women, as they were more affected by unemployment), which led to a demographic decline in the region.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania today

The region is known for its unspoiled natural beauty, numerous nature parks, and nature reserves. The Mecklenburg Lake District is one of the largest water protection areas in Europe, and the coastal regions serve as habitats for a wide variety of bird species. The region is known for its large area combined with a low population density (a total of 1.6 million inhabitants).

The economy of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is diverse, ranging from traditional sectors such as agriculture, tourism, and fishing to modern sectors such as renewable energy and IT. The wind power industry, in particular, has grown in importance in recent years. The district of Vorpommern-Greifswald and the city of Rostock are the key hubs of innovation and growth.

One problem is the aging population. Many young people are moving from rural areas to major cities like Berlin or Hamburg. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s population has declined in recent decades due to out-migration and low birth rates. In 2023, the state had about 1.6 million residents, representing a significant decline compared to the 1.7 million residents in the 1990s. In 2023, the GDP per capita in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was approximately 36,000 euros, which is relatively low compared to the German average of around 48,000 euros (2023). On the other hand, the cost of living is lower than in other German states, which is particularly attractive for families and retirees.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          Car

If you’d like to explore the region on your own and at your own pace, you can also travel by car. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has a well-developed road network that connects major cities as well as remote villages and attractions. The coastal region and the islands of Rügen and Usedom, in particular, are easily accessible by car.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          Bicycle

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is a great destination for cyclists. The state offers numerous bike paths that wind through beautiful countryside, historic towns, and along the coast. The “Baltic Sea Coast Cycle Route” and the “Mecklenburg Lake Cycle Route” are particularly popular and offer stunning views of the natural landscape.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          Boat Travel and Ferries

The Baltic Sea and the many islands in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania also offer opportunities for boat trips. The island of Hiddensee is accessible only by ferry from Schaprode on Rügen or from Stralsund. Ferries run several times a day, especially during the peak tourist season. Cars are not permitted on the island. The Mecklenburg Lake District is also popular for houseboat vacations. However, the most beautiful spots are not accessible to motorboats for nature conservation reasons.

Ferry service between the Baltic Sea islands

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          • Rügen – Hiddensee: There are regular ferries between Schaprode on Rügen and the island of Hiddensee.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          • Rügen – Vilm: Ferries from Lauterbach on Rügen travel to the island of Vilm. However, this route is only available for guided tours, as the island is a nature reserve and access is strictly regulated.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          • Rügen – Usedom: There are also ferry connections from Rügen to Usedom. These ferries run regularly between the two islands and provide a quick connection. The connection between the Baltic Sea resort of Zinnowitz on Usedom and the port of Sassnitz on Rügen is particularly popular.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          • Usedom – Bornholm (Denmark): There is also an international ferry service between Usedom and the Danish island of Bornholm. The ferry runs from Swinemünde on Usedom to Rønne on Bornholm and is a particularly popular route in the summer for travelers from Germany and Scandinavia.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          Bus and Train

Due to the low population density, local public transportation is not very well developed. However, cities such as Schwerin, Wismar, Rostock, and Stralsund are well connected to the rail network.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          Airports

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is well connected to domestic and international destinations via several airports. The state’s main airports are:

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          • Rostock-Laage Airport (RLG): The largest airport in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is located south of Rostock and primarily offers connections to other European cities. It is an important airport for international tourists, especially during the summer months, when many flights are available from Scandinavia and other countries.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          • Heringsdorf Airport (HDF): This smaller airport is located on the island of Usedom and offers seasonal flights from Germany and Europe, primarily in the summer. It is ideal for travelers wishing to visit the Baltic Sea coast and the island of Usedom.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          • Lübeck Airport (LBC): Although this airport is technically not located in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania but in Schleswig-Holstein, many visitors from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania use Lübeck Airport because it is only a short drive away. It offers numerous low-cost flight connections within Europe.

The airports in Hamburg and Berlin are also good options.
