Sonnenobservatorium Goseck

archaeology History

The Goseck solar observatory is one of the oldest known solar observatories in Europe. The reconstructed circular ditch dates back to the Neolithic period and was probably used for astronomical observations and cult rituals. The precise alignment of the site with the position of the sun is particularly evident during the winter solstice.
