Schwedenlöcher

The Schwedenlöcher are one of the most famous gorges in Saxon Switzerland. Narrow crevices, steep steps and moss-covered rocks create an almost mystical atmosphere. The hiking trail leads through impressive sandstone formations and offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. The name Schwedenlöcher probably dates back to the Thirty Years' War. According to tradition, inhabitants of the surrounding villages hid in the narrow rocky gorges and caves in the area during the Swedish troop raids. Although this origin is not historically proven, it is the most common explanation for the name.
