The region around Idar-Oberstein once had natural gemstone deposits, primarily agate, amethyst, and jasper. These were formed by volcanic processes: crystals formed in cavities of cooled lava, and over millions of years, these crystals grew into gemstones. The local deposits are largely depleted, and gemstones are now imported from Brazil, Central Africa, or India.
The museum presents gemstones from all over the world as well as artfully crafted pieces of jewelry. The collection shows the diversity and significance of these materials. Visitors are given a comprehensive overview of gemstone art.
The gemstone mine is the only visitor mine in Europe where gemstones are still found. Guided tours lead through underground passages and show the mining of agates and other minerals. Visitors can experience the geological basis of the region.
