For centuries, the city served as the seat of the Princes of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen and developed into a political and cultural hub of the region. The castle, perched high above the Danube, continues to dominate the cityscape and is considered one of the most striking structures in southern Germany.
In addition to its historic old town and riverside location, Sigmaringen also offers access to the diverse landscape of the Danube Valley.

The House of Hohenzollern was one of the most significant ruling dynasties in Europe and shaped the history of Germany for centuries. They originally hailed from southern Germany, where Sigmaringen Castle also served as the residence of the Swabian line.

Over time, the family split into two main lines: the Swabian line (Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen) and the Brandenburg-Prussian line.

The latter, in particular, gained great political significance. It produced the Electors of Brandenburg and later the Kings of Prussia. Ultimately, the House of Hohenzollern also provided the German emperors, including Wilhelm II, who reigned until 1918.
