Maulbronn

As the best-preserved medieval monastery complex north of the Alps, the UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most impressive testimonies to the Cistercians.

The monastery was founded by the Cistercian Order. This community emerged in the 11th century as a reform movement within the Benedictine Order. The Cistercians sought to lead a simpler, stricter monastic life with a greater emphasis on work. The focus was on prayer, physical labor, and a deliberately simple life without great pomp. At the same time, however, they were highly organized and economically successful: they cultivated the land, built sophisticated water and irrigation systems, and advanced agriculture.

This combination of spirituality and practical living is also evident in Maulbronn. The monks utilized a complex system of canals, ponds, and mills, parts of which are still preserved today. As a result, the monastery became an important economic center of the region. After the Reformation, the complex was no longer used as a monastery, but it remained exceptionally well-preserved. Today, visitors can walk through cloisters, church interiors, and courtyards, gaining some insight into the monks’ way of life.
